Fashion’s most coveted careers . Fashion rules the world as it’s not about just clothing yourself but about projecting your personality and attitude in your own style. It reflects your individuality and identity. From being simple and classy to ostentatious and gaudy, fashion defines you. The world of fashion is ever changing, trends become history soon. With changing times, the fad for fashion changes and that’s where fashion designers come to the rescue.Fashion designing is an enthralling world and has evolved into a full-fledged industry today and is well accepted as an eminent career option globally. Charles Frederick Worth is believed to be the first fashion designer from 1826 to 1895 who started the tradition of fashion houses in Paris and advising people what kind of apparel would suit them. Since then fashion has come a long way connecting cultures universally. Since the dawn of 21st century in India, career in fashion industry is a much sort after option. The young generation, bold and daring is ready to experiment and innovate using their skills and creativity. Annie Dutta, a recent pass out from NIFT Delhi states that fashion designing has much to offer to the young minds. She completed her degree specializing in leather designing as the course included studying other materials too which was an added advantage. She revealed that she always wanted to cater to niche market and leather was the best option. Annie stated that in the fashion world success depends on two things- creativity and the ability to sell that creativity. She quoted an example of a global brand that has come up with a special night suit which has a shirt that looks like a formal shirt aptly suited for WFH consumers during Covid pandemic. She also mentioned about various career opportunities like, apparel designing, shoe designing, table top design, home decor styling, food styling (restaurant menu design etc.), accessory designing, product designing (developing apps but coding isn’t taught), merchandising (advertising, promotion, display set up) etc. that you can opt for after completion of your course. Colleges like NID(Gujrat), NIFT, Pearl Academy, JD Institute etc. offer varied courses covering different arenas of fashion. Akkash K Aggarwal, famous jewelry designer, an alumini of Indian Institute of Gems and Jewelry launched his brand Shubhashini Ornaments in 2010 at a time when apparel designers were the only ones acknowledged as fashion designers. Designer jewelry was evolving and trying to create a space in the fashion world and gained momentum few years back. He mentioned institutes like PEARL academy, NIFT, IIGJ(Ministry of Commerce) provide courses related to jewelry design, diamond grading, jewelry manufacturing, quality control etc. and campus placements for better career opportunities. He believes jewelry design is a promising career. But he also revealed that eco-friendly and sustainable jewelry, tribal ethnic jewelry, wood jewelry, terracotta jewelry etc. still need more space to grow in the market. Fashion jewelry is trending since a couple of years. Since 2015 Akassh has been showcasing his collection in INDIA RUNWAY WEEK twice a year and it has been a huge hit. Though jewelry has taken a back seat during the covid pandemic yet its charm hasn’t fully lost yet. He quoted, “Market teaches more than any institution- encouraging change and innovation”. Nirmesh and Reet is an Indian brand truly representing vocal for localconcept portraying an Atmanirbhar Bharat. They specialize in hand crafted dupattas made with traditional Indian techniques like Ajrak, Bandhani, Kalamkari etc. For them fashion designing is all about sustainability that celebrates culture and tradition. They amalgamate culture into art giving it a unique essence. To quote them,’ A dupatta is two-and-a-half-meter canvas to play with’. They work in close unison with local and customary artisans and handloom workers for days to finish one single masterpiece. They say sustainable fashion is the future and young entrepreneurs should work on it. According to them fashion designing is all about being artistic with expertise and constant learning and it is a great career choice if you are seriously passionate about the fashion world. Aditi Jain, a grad from NIFT Mumbai batch states that fashion world has evolved over the years. She says fashion designing has reached a new horizon altogether with fashion related courses on management, communication, Journalism, blogging etc. These specialized courses give students an opportunity to enhance and hone their expertise in their choice of field. Growth and potential in this sector is quite high if you have the passion and talent. In her 18 years of career in the fashion industry she has seen fashion world being revolutionized. She quotes, “The exposure is better with varied and bespoke knowledge”. Thus fashion designing is no longer only about designing apparels, but it is a world in itself involving design, creativity, exclusivity, technology as well as business. It has also given rise to other related career paths like makeup artist, hair styling, fashion bloggers, fashion photographers, stylists etc. It is an ocean in which passionate individuals can sail through commitment and hard work.Fashion, according to Oscar Wilde is eventually ‘that by which the fantastic becomes for a moment the universal’.
